SUMMARY:BASL Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The BASL Annual Meeting is the highlight of the BASL calendar and the main liver meeting in the UK. This year we hope to attract in excess of 500 delegates\, where all of us interested in liver disease will share time whether we are clinicians\, nurses\, basic scientists\, pharmacists\, working in industry or students. \nThis year the BASL conference opens after lunch on Wednesday 20th September and continues through to lunchtime on Friday 22nd September. With the BASL NF Nurses Day running in parallel on Thursday 21st September. \nOn Wednesday the BASL conference explores clinical and liver related aspects of senescence with a distinguished international faculty. A highlight of the meeting will be the state of the art lecture by Professor Judith Campisi (Buck Institute\, California). The second day has two streams: first\, the interaction between the Liver and the Gut and second\, the named lectures. These include the Ralph Wright Lecture (Professor John O’Grady) the British Liver Trust Lecture (Dr. Mary Ramsay)\, the inaugural Alex Mowat Lecture (Dr. Sue Beath) and the annual Dame Sheila Sherlock Prize Lecture.

SUMMARY:International Symposium: Liver Transplantation & Liver Research in Birmingham
DESCRIPTION:In the early 1980s attempts to launch a pioneering liver transplant programme in Birmingham were met with hostility and disbelief- liver transplants had only been performed in a few centres throughout the world and results were poor- fewer than one in three patients lived beyond a year. The vision and courage of the early pioneers helped to sustain the pressures and overcome the challenges that lay ahead them.\nMove forward thirty- five years and the Birmingham programme has grown from strength to strength\, contributing through innovation and science to the current successful outcomes in liver transplantation. Birmingham now has one of the largest liver transplant programmes in Europe performing in excess of 250 adult and paediatric transplants per calendar year. \nThis year\, the Liver Units in Birmingham will celebrate two milestones:\n1) 5000 liver transplants performed either at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham or Birmingham Children’s Hospital\n2) Thirty years since the Centre for Liver Research was established at the University of Birmingham. \nThese clinical and academic achievements will be celebrated in a scientific conference to be held in Birmingham on 5th and 6th September 2017. \nKeynote speakers will include internationally renowned pioneers of liver transplantation and experts in liver disease. There will be parallel specialist sessions for basic scientists\, nursing staff and allied health professionals. \nWe would like to invite all trainees\, international fellows\, researchers and all other colleagues who have contributed to this success\, to get together\, share our experiences and discuss the future of liver transplantation and liver research in a scientific forum.

SUMMARY:Answering the Unmet Medical Need in Primary Billiary Cholangitis (PBC)
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome you to this Industry sponsored symposium focusing on alleviating the individual and population wide needs associated with primary biliary cholangitis (formerly known as primary biliary cirrhosis; PBC). \nWith Obeticholic acid (Intercept Pharmaceuticals) approaching approval for patients with PBC\, the therapeutic landscape is likely to evolve significantly\, alongside notable renewed interest in PBC generally\, with the UK-PBC consortium as you know\, being very active nationally in driving basic and applied translational science for patient benefit. \nPBC remains an important liver disease: 1 in 1000 women over the age of 40 live with disease\, in which autoimmune biliary injury drives a chronic\, and ductopenic\, cholestatic liver injury. Untreated disease or disease unresponsive to the only presently licenced therapy\, Ursodeoxycholic acid\, progresses to end stage liver disease and all the attendant complications. Accompanying the chronic liver injury are frequent symptomatic complaints for patients associated with impairments in quality of life from pruritus and fatigue. \nThis programme with an expert faculty\, will present an overview of the state of the art in PBC therapeutics\, with an emphasis on the need for early diagnosis\, relevant clinical endpoints and emerging treatment options targeted to pathogenic mechanisms. The presentations have been designed to increase the knowledge\, competence and practice performance of clinicians who care for patients with PBC. \nWe naturally look forward to meeting you at this exciting morning Industry sponsored symposium\, which we are confident will prove to be of interest and broad educational interest. \nDr. Stephen Ryder\nProf. Gideon Hirschfeld \nDOWNLOADS\nEvent Flyer PDF 1.05Mb
